About Camera Obscura & World of Illusions

Situated directly next to Edinburgh Castle, Camera Obscura has been entertaining visitors since 1853. The experience starts on the roof inside the Victorian 'Camera Obscura' itself—a fascinating optical periscope projecting a live, moving image of the city onto a viewing table. Below this, there are five incredibly chaotic floors packed with over 100 hands-on optical illusions, light tricks, a mirror maze, and a dizzying vortex tunnel.

1. The Rooftop Views

Climb all the way to the 6th floor first. You will be rewarded with free rooftop telescopes offering some of the best, unobstructed panoramic views of Edinburgh.

2. The Camera Obscura Show

Step into the dark Victorian rooftop chamber where a guide uses a giant periscope to project live, moving images of the city onto a wooden table.

3. Magic Gallery & Light Illusions

Work your way down the floors, getting hands-on with plasma tubes, giant holograms, and the famous 'Severed Head' illusion table.

4. The Vortex Tunnel

The grand finale. Try to walk straight across a completely stationary bridge while the spinning lights trick your brain into thinking the room is turning upside down.
